Kovalam is a quaint village that lies on the Malabar Coast. With its unspoiled beaches and long stretches of sand, this town suddenly became popular among local and international tourists. Today, Kovalam beach is the most visited beach location across the country. The name ‘Kovalam’ means a groove of coconut trees. As indicated by its name, coconut trees line up the beach, which gives it an impressive look.

You will find it very relaxing to stay amidst the lovely bays surrounded by huge coconut grooves. You can see the lovely white beach sands washed away by the azure waters of the Arabian Sea and the lovely rocks that stud the beach side, making this place a paradise resort.

Kovalam is a quiet, secluded natural bay where you can relax under the shade of palm trees and listen to the gentle waves of the sea shore. If you have done away with indulging in water sport activities, get into the town and check out handicraft stores, jewelry stores and cloth stores that line up alongside the waterfront. You can enjoy wonderful sea food at the beachside restaurants here.

The beautiful crescent-shaped Kovalam can be divided into three sections. In the southern part, you can find the popular Lighthouse Kovalam beach. If you move further south on the beach, you can gain an amazing view of the Vizhinjam mosque.

The middle section is called Hawah beach and every morning the lovely ocean breeze beckons the fisherman to come out to sea. In the northern section lies the Sumudra beach which is fairly quiet and unaffected by changes over time. Kovalam beach stretch is lined up with a couple of ordinary fishing vessels.

In the evening, you can visit festivals where music or dance performances are shown, the most enthralling being the lovely Kathakali performances. At one point, the quiet village of Kovalam was a beautiful settlement enclosed by rocky headland, but with modern developments this town has transformed quickly.

You can find different kinds of accommodation here, ranging from the cheap budget hotels to the ITDC-run Ashoka and the Kerala tourism department’s ‘Samudra’ that provides five-star accommodation. A point to be noted about this town is that, not only is it not just a famous beach resort; it is also turning into a Yoga and Health center quickly. You can enjoy lovely ayurvedic massages and oil baths and also learn yoga from beginner’s to advanced levels from experts in the field.
