Munnar is located in a place where there are three mountain streams – Nallathanni, Mudrapuzha and Kundala. It has an altitude of 1600m and was then serving as the summer resort for the British Government in south India. Widespread tea plantations, picture book towns, winding lanes and the holiday facilities make it a popular town. Among the various kinds of plant life found here is a special one called the Neelakurinji. This unique blue flower blooms once in 12 years and the next time it does in in 2006. Anamudi, South India’s highest peak at over 2695m is in Munnar. It is the perfect trekking spot.

Places to visit

Pothamedu - 6 kms from Munnar : Pothamedu gives us a great view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in the hill station of Munnar. The rolling hills, the lush green mountains and the breathtaking sceneries are ideal for trekking and also for walks on the long mountain.

Devikulam - 7 kms from Munnar : This place has velvety lawns, a variety of flora and fauna and great mountain air, making it a an amazing place to visit. A good picnic spot is the Sita Devi Lake which has mineral waters and beautiful surroundings. One can also trout fish at the lake.

Nyayamakad - 10 kms from Munnar : It is situated between Munnar Hill Station and Rajamala. This is a place of wonderful waterfalls. The height of the cascades is of about 1800 meters. Such surroundings make it the perfect picnic spot and also a trekking point.

Rajamala -15 kms from Munnar Hill Station : It is said to be the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr. A half of the world’s rare mountain goat population, which is fast becoming extinct, is found here.

Eravikulam National Park - 15 kms from Munnar : Located in the Devikulam Taluk, this 97 sq. Km park is home to the Nilgiri Tahr. The peak of Anamudi is in the southern region of this park.
