Location Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is positioned on the banks of Vembanand Lake which is 20 kms from Kottayam in Kerala. There is a huge avian population in the sanctuary. The birds that can be found here are migratory Siberian Cranes, owls, waterfowls and cuckoos as well.

The Kumarakom Tourist Complex is spread over an area of 101 acres of wooded land and a lake. The complex was renovated by the Taj Kerala Resorts Limited around the 50 years old “Baker’s Mansion” in grand style. Earlier, the complex had been just a small hotel which was being run by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).

Major Attractions Of The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary Resident birds and migratory birds are the fauna found in the sanctuary. Siberian Cranes, egrets, darters, herons, parrots, larks, flycatchers, wood beetles and teals are the migratory birds that visit the sanctuary every year. Also, waterfowls, cuckoos, egrets, herons, and the water ducks complete the list of resident birds. We can find mangrove forests, green paddy fields and coconut groves in the bird sanctuary. There is a picturesque landscape along with canals and waterways not to mention beautiful while lilies.

How To Reach There The nearest railhead is Kottayam (14 kms) and Cochin International Airport (90 kms) is the nearest airport. It is also connected with the State and National Highway with the rest of the country.

Note: Best time to visit the sanctuary is November to March
